PETROLEUM BITUMEN
Petroleum bitumen is mainly from crude oil and normally called “Bitumen” or “Asphalt”. They store crude oil in tanks at a temperature of 60° C. In other words, petroleum bitumen is the remnant of a distillation tower. This material in crude oil varies from zero to 50 percent.
Petroleum bitumen is categorized in three groups:
1. The Air Blowing Bitumen is produced by processing vacuum bottom (VB) and air in the reactor. Due to the control of the process conditions, different grades will be obtained such as Penetration grade, Viscosity grade and Performance grade
2. Bitumen Emulsion is a liquified type of bitumen with a low viscosity. By dispersing bitumen in water and adding an emulsifier ordinary bitumen turns into a low viscosity, liquid that can easily be used. Bitumen Emulsions classified as Quick Set (QS), Rapid Set (RS) ,Medium Set (MS) and Slow Set (SS).
3. Cutback Bitumen produced by adding controlled amounts of petroleum solvent such as Kerosene and Gasoline. Base on the time of curing after spraying, Cutback Bitumen classification as Rapid Curing (RC), Medium Curing (MC) and Slow Curing (SC)
Bitumen can also occur in nature. Deposits of naturally occurring bitumen form at the bottom of ancient lakes and below the Earth’s surface (gilsonite) where prehistoric organisms have since decayed and have been subjected to heat and pressure.
